California Whitewater Rafting History with W.E.T. River Trips

Welcome to WET River Trips
California whitewater rafting or California river trips...are they different? Historically, river trips have been around for quite a while. In the old days, a river trip conjured up visions of rafting in an oar boat while hanging on one of the thwarts. Most trips were done in multiple days. Sierra Club members in the 50's & 60's, rafted the Southwest in oar boats and created a wonderful ambiance around rafting trips. People were there for the river, the beauty of the Canyonlands and the experience of the rapids.

Around the early 80's, a bunch of guides started experimenting with paddles. While the guide hung from the back and ruddered the boat downstream, he would shout out commands to his guide buddies as they negotiated the river. Paddle trips were born. Most of these were on serious American whitewater sections of the rivers. (W.E.T. guides were the first to do a commercial paddle trip on the Tuolumne river before anyone else.) Back then, the trips were all about rowing. Those paddle trips were done in "bucket boats" with no self-bailing! Control was difficult after each rapid since the boats filled up with water! After each major rapid, someone in the boat would start bailing the water out with a plastic bucket...eeehaw! The heavy boat was very difficult to manuever. Nevertheless, the paddling public got wind of the new mode and they were hooked, too!

Now in the new millenium, paddle trips are the norm and California rafting and paddling are done on whitewater rivers and on gentle floats. California whitewater rafting and California river trips now encompass all river rafting that have rapids above Class I.

Compare these two rivers: South or Middle?
Which one do I do?
