| I am a rafting customer who loves to go rafting every season. I started when I was 10 years old. My mom and dad took me on my first trip on the Stanislaus river. I remember how excited I was and how cool the guides were. I remember jumping off a cliff into the river and exploring a scary dark cave. Those days, only oar boats were used so our family just laid back in the boats on top of the thwarts and got a tan. After that trip I was hooked.
Our family continued to run rivers with various river companies, but we usually preferred to go with smaller to mid-size river companies. We always seemed to find that they had the best guides! We went on the Stanislaus until a dam was built which really made me very sad. I just couldn't imagine drowning that beautiful river. I still remember that man who chained himself to the pillars in a wild protest. (Note from RAFTWET: Mark DuBois-reknown conservationist & environmental champion) Anyway, we discovered the American river rafting system. What a great set of rivers. The South Fork American River was similar to the Stanislaus but had more rapids overall. By the time I was 16 years old, I rafted the North Fork American River which scared the daylights out of me! I had never seen such a technical set of rapids in such a beautiful rocky setting. It's a river trip that I try to do every year now in the spring. I didn't get to do the Middle Fork American River until the summer of 1981, when a handful of rafting companies started to run this river which initially was said to be unrunnable. I had heard about Tunnel Chute and it sounded like the weirdest rapid. We set up at the top and then we held on as we swooshed through the chute in about 3 seconds and then floated through a dark tunnel. Weird. |
Extended river trips are my favorite. I've done the Rogue in Oregon, the Salmon in Idaho, the Colorado through the Grand Canyon and the Klamath River in California. Multi-day trips are the best because you slow down to "river time" and mellow out like you've never been before!
I drag all my friends and family now on trips. I'm a little older and wiser so I have a tendency to stick with the same company each year. Their guides are really top notch and it's nice to see their faces each year. As a rafting customer, I suggest that you call the river company and ask tons of questions. They should be knowledgeable and honest in their evaluation of your abilities and the river's difficulties. Ask about rafting discounts. Most will give you a few bucks off of their trips. Especially if you are a repeat customer. Don't be afraid to ask about special trips planned on their calendars. Sometimes you can get on a partially filled trip at a nice rate. Kind of like a hotel or airplane discount. Plan ahead. I can't count how many times I've tried to get a reservation on a particular weekend and just couldn't because the company had sold out spaces. I usually start planning in January for the upcoming year and I have organized some really big trips. The company that I go with always gives me a free rafting trip because I am a repeat customer and they love me! --Ruth-- copywrite February 2002 |
