River Trips for the Copacetic Mind...
I'm a retired guide and I used to work on the Southfork American for W.E.T. River Trips. In those days, things were a lot more hippie-like and we used to just meet people on the river and take them down. Just a phone call that promised us that the clients would arrive and pay at the river site. (Note from W.E.T.: Reservations are necessary now!)
I remember a really groovy trip American River rafting with the members of a famous rock and roll band. I think they were called REO Speedwagon. The office got a call to make a reservation and all of us guides were sworn to secrecy. When the clients arrived, you could tell that they were all rock and rollers...long hair everywhere! They had a couple of kids with them and you could tell mom and dad were trying to spend some time with the kids after a long hard music tour.
We noticed that they were very secretive and I could tell that they thought we didn't know who they were. It was kind of funny. They had a large entourage and a touring bus that dropped them off. A "front man" approached and asked us to be discreet. We thought it was weird since we had taken so many other celebrities down the river!
We got them in the boats and had a really great time with them. That evening, we had a great campfire and roasted s'mores with the kids. One of the guys grabbed a bail bucket (Note: those were the days of the non-self bailing boats...today's technology are all self-bailing boats) and started tapping a rythym with a stick. Another guy started tapping sticks together and against his hand. It started a strange musical pattern and all of us guides were drawn to the sounds.
They did a whole concert for us. There was such a beautiful sound of music coming from this group. It was heaven!
We found out later that there were some music writers for Michael Jackson on the trip and they were just writing and singing the music as it came to them. Wow, I thought it was really cool...it was like watching a bunch of artists at work.
I'll never forget that trip. It was the coolest trip that I ever did with any river company. Now, I go on trips with my own kids and I always talk about all the great trips that I had with this company.
You're never too old to float the river!
