Spring rafting trips on California whitewater with W.E.T. River Trips is an exciting time but you have to know what to wear in order to enjoy yourself out there on those cold rivers. Wetsuits with proper fabrics and gear will make you comfortable for this active, wet sport!
What to wear includes a base layer of poly-gear such as a long sleeve sweater or pull-over and long tights. Fabrics such as polyester, capilene, polypropylene and/or wool will help insulate you. These fabrics "wick" away the moisture to keep your skin dry and warm.
Adding the wetsuit over this provides another layer to insulate you from the cold water. We like to add another layer of waterproof fabric to keep the chill off the entire upper body.
DO NOT WEAR COTTON on the river.
California rafting in the foothills during the summer can be hotter than a habanero chili! The weather can range from a mild 85 degrees to 110 degrees; hotter enough to fry an egg on a river rock! Dress comfortably in fabric that dries quickly. We recommend a bathing suit, shorts, tennis shoes and a visor. If you bring sunglasses, use an old pair and make sure you have a safety strap like a croakie or chum to keep them on your head.
For those of you on overnight rafting trips, there is a bit more to bring. One thing we do want to suggest is that less is more! If you are only with us for a couple of days, keep in mind that you will be in rafting clothes for two days, and you only need a dry change of clothes and an extra pair of shoes in the evening. Save the make-up, hairdryer for the last shower before you leave. Toiletry items should be biodegradable, and you really don't need to shave, do you?
